A printable colouring book for kids needs more than a collection of attractive pictures. Buyers need pages that print cleanly, match the stated theme and suit the children who will use them. If you plan to sell a colouring pack as a digital download, begin with the actual printed experience.

Define the book before drawing pages
Choose a theme and audience. “Farm animals colouring pages for preschoolers” suggests larger shapes and simpler scenes than a detailed nature book for older children. Decide whether the buyer wants a quiet-time activity, a party table pack or a longer book to assemble at home. The title, artwork and previews should all reflect that choice.
Create a short page plan. For example, a farm pack might have a cow, sheep, horse, pig and mixed barnyard scene. This helps you avoid near-duplicate images and gives the customer a reason to browse every page.

Draw for home printing
Use crisp outlines and enough open space for a child to colour. Check small facial details, crowded backgrounds and accidental black fills. A white page background usually saves ink and makes it easier to use pencils or crayons. Ensure the design leaves a print-safe margin; an edge-to-edge flourish may disappear on a basic home printer.
Keep line weight consistent. Print a sample on ordinary paper at the actual size and ask whether a child could understand the shapes without squinting. If you offer A4 and US Letter, check both for distortion or unwanted cropping.
What to include in the download
A ready-to-print PDF is a straightforward core file. You might add a cover, “this book belongs to” page or extra activity only when it serves the intended use. Specify whether the advertised count includes the cover. If pages are meant to be printed individually, provide them in an easy order; if the buyer will bind a book, consider how the pages will sit together.
Do not promise commercial use or editable files to a personal-use customer unless you actually provide those rights and files. Clear terms avoid confusion between your PLR source product for sellers and a finished colouring book sold to families.

Make images that show variety
Use a first image that shows the theme and several representative pages. Follow with page previews at a useful scale. If the pack contains 20 pages, show enough distinct artwork to support that claim, and write “20 colouring pages” only if there really are 20 colouring pages rather than 19 plus a cover.
A simple mockup can show printed use, but avoid relying entirely on a cover that hides the content. Tell shoppers the page size, file type and whether the download is black-and-white. Describe a digital file as a digital file; do not imply a physical book is shipped.

Quality control: inspect every page
- Check linework for broken shapes, extra limbs and unintended marks.
- Confirm the image is genuinely black-and-white if that is what the listing promises.
- Look for copyrighted characters or trademarks you do not have rights to use.
- Open the exported PDF and print several representative pages.
- Confirm each image differs meaningfully from the others.
Common questions
How many pages should a colouring pack have?
There is no required count. A focused small pack with distinct, tested pages can be valuable. Decide what the buyer needs, then make the count clear in the listing. Do not pad a pack with duplicates merely to advertise a larger number.
Should I include coloured examples?
They can help a buyer picture the result, but show the actual black-and-white pages prominently. If a coloured preview is not included as a printable, say so or use it only as clearly styled imagery.
Can I use licensed clipart?
Check the clipart licence for use in downloadable colouring pages and for any restrictions on reselling artwork as the main value. If selling on Etsy, the final design also needs to meet Etsy's current originality rules. Permission from an asset creator does not automatically establish marketplace eligibility.
Example page plan for a small book
Take a woodland animal theme for younger children. Plan a fox, rabbit, hedgehog, owl and deer, each with a distinct pose and simple background. Add a group scene if it remains easy to colour. Before adding a cover, print the six artwork pages and check that none look like near duplicates and that each animal has clean, complete outlines.
Only then design the cover and decide how to describe the count. “Six colouring pages plus cover” is clearer than “seven-page colouring book” if the cover is not meant to be coloured. This detail helps buyers understand what they are paying for.
Sell a clear format
Some customers want individual sheets to print on demand; others want pages they can bind into a book. You can accommodate both in one orderly PDF if the pages are arranged consistently. If you supply separate PNGs or an editable source, explain why they are included and check that the platform accepts the files. More formats do not automatically improve the product if they confuse the customer.
Use specific search language that matches the actual artwork, such as the theme and intended age, and check that competing search results are about the same kind of download. Avoid “best-selling” or “educational” claims you cannot support.
Choose the next related product
A colouring book can lead to a matching activity pack, bookmark or party placemat for the same buyer. The designs should be genuinely useful in the new format, not the same page relabelled. Browse other kids printable ideas, or follow our Etsy listing guide for the full workflow.
