Thinking about selling kids printables on Etsy but unsure what to make first? Start with one useful product for a specific age group or activity. You can build from there once you know what shoppers click, save and buy.
This guide walks you through choosing an idea, preparing printable files, creating an Etsy listing and improving it after launch. It also explains an important distinction if you use private label rights (PLR) templates: permission from a template creator does not, by itself, mean a product meets Etsy’s rules for seller-designed items.

What are kids printables?
Kids printables are digital files a customer buys and prints at home, in a classroom or for an event. Examples include colouring pages, scavenger hunts, reward charts, activity placemats, bingo games and early learning worksheets. On Etsy, the buyer generally receives a digital download rather than a physical parcel.
A good first product solves a clear problem. “Rainy day activities for 5-year-olds” is easier to plan and explain than “a bit of everything for children.” Think about the adult buying it: a parent filling an afternoon, a teacher preparing a lesson or a party organiser looking for an easy activity.
How to sell kids printables on Etsy: 8 practical steps
1. Choose one audience and one use case
Pick a narrow starting point: preschool counting, birthday party activities, travel games or bedtime reward charts. Then decide what the buyer needs to do with your printable. A parent may want something they can download and print in five minutes; a teacher may need several copies with minimal ink.
Write a one-sentence product promise before designing: “A six-page dinosaur activity pack for ages 4–6 to print for a rainy afternoon.” It gives you a useful filter for every page you add.
2. Research the search language
Search Etsy as a buyer would. Try phrases such as “dinosaur activity pages printable,” “kids birthday scavenger hunt” or “preschool counting worksheet.” Look at how competing listings describe their age range, theme, number of pages, format and occasion. Record phrases that accurately describe your own product; do not copy another seller’s artwork or wording.
Choose one main phrase for each listing and a few closely related phrases. For a dinosaur pack, relevant wording might include “dinosaur activity pack,” “printable dinosaur games” and “preschool dinosaur activities.” A broad phrase such as “kids printable” describes the category, but a more specific phrase often tells you more about what a shopper wants.
3. Make a small, complete product

For a first listing, a focused pack is manageable. A dinosaur activity pack might contain a matching page, a simple maze, a counting page, a colouring page and a short answer sheet where needed. Each page should belong to the same theme and suit the promised age range.
Check instructions from a child’s or parent’s point of view. Is the task clear without an explanation from you? Are the lines large enough to print cleanly? Is there enough white space? If a maze or puzzle has an answer, test it yourself. Put a printed sample beside your screen; errors that are easy to miss digitally often become obvious on paper.

4. Prepare files buyers can actually use
Export a clean PDF and open the final download, not just the design file. Print a test page at actual size. If you sell internationally, consider including both US Letter and A4 versions, clearly named. Tell buyers which sizes and file types they receive and whether the download is colour, black and white, or both.

Etsy currently allows up to five files for an instant digital listing, with a 20 MB maximum per file. If you have multiple files, name them plainly, for example Dinosaur-Activities-US-Letter.pdf and Dinosaur-Activities-A4.pdf. Check Etsy’s current file requirements before uploading, since platform limits can change.
5. Create listing images that answer questions

Your first image should show what the buyer is getting at a glance. Follow it with close-ups of several pages and a simple image that states the page count, size and digital format. A desk mockup can help shoppers imagine using the activity, but include clear page previews as well. Avoid showing activities that are not in the download.
Make text on preview images readable on a phone. If a pack has eight pages, show enough variety to prove that the pages are different. Add a small “digital download” label where it helps prevent confusion about physical shipping.

6. Write a specific title and description
Lead with the product itself. For example: Dinosaur Activity Pack for Kids, Printable Games and Worksheets. Describe the actual item rather than filling the title with repeated synonyms. Etsy says its search looks across the title, tags, attributes, description, first photo and other listing information, so each part should reinforce the same accurate product story.
In the first lines of your description, say who the printable is for and what the buyer receives. Then cover page count, sizes, file format, printing tips, how to access the download and whether it is for personal or classroom use. Only promise the rights your own licence actually grants. A short FAQ inside the listing can answer common questions about instant downloads and printing.
7. Set a price you can sustain
Compare similar products with the same scope, but do not copy a price without checking your own costs and effort. A single worksheet and a themed pack solve different problems. Think about Etsy fees, any advertising spend, the time you spent creating and testing the files, and the support you may need to provide. A permanent deep discount can make it hard to see whether the underlying price works.
Start with a price you can explain based on what is included. After a few weeks, review visits, favourites, conversion and buyer questions. If people click but do not buy, check the first photo, previews, description and price together before assuming you need more listings.
8. Publish, learn and improve

Once your listing is live, review it on a phone and complete a test of the download process if possible. Share it with an audience likely to need that activity, and build related products around the same buyer. A birthday scavenger hunt might lead to a party bingo game and a printable placemat; a preschool counting page might grow into a small themed pack.
Give each product a chance to collect useful data. Use Etsy’s own shop stats to see which listings get views and which convert. If a listing gets little traffic, revisit its search language and thumbnail. If it gets views but few sales, inspect the offer and images. Can you use PLR to make printables for Etsy?
PLR can be a starting resource, but there are two separate questions: what the PLR licence permits and what Etsy allows. Check the specific licence for editing, commercial use, finished-file sales and any restrictions on sharing source files. You can read PLR Fairy’s licence terms here.
Etsy’s current Creativity Standards describe digital downloads in its “designed by a seller” category as the seller’s original designs. Etsy also restricts reselling items the seller was not involved in designing or making. A PLR licence alone does not override those platform rules. If you use licensed elements or a template, create a genuinely original finished design through your own creative work, make sure you have the needed rights, and review Etsy’s current policy before listing it. Uploading an unchanged third-party printable as your own Etsy design risks falling outside Etsy’s requirements.
Our separate guide to using PLR printables in an Etsy shop covers the licence side in more detail. Always apply Etsy’s current rules as well.

Common questions
Do I need dozens of listings before I start?
No. Begin with one well-made product and a listing that explains it clearly. Then create related products for the same buyer, using what you learn from shop stats and customer questions.
Should I offer A4 or US Letter?
If you expect buyers in both the UK and US, offering both can reduce printing friction. Label each file and mention the included sizes in the listing. Test both exports so nothing important gets cut off at the edges.
What kinds of kids printables should I try first?
Choose a use case you can make and test well: a focused activity pack, scavenger hunt, reward chart, party game or simple worksheet set. Look for a specific buyer need rather than a promise that a certain theme will always sell.
Can I sell the same printable on Shopify too?
Many sellers use their own store alongside Etsy, subject to the rights for each design and each platform’s rules. Keep product details and customer delivery clear in both places. Your own store can also help you build a direct relationship with repeat buyers.
