When someone buys a printable, they cannot hold it before checkout. Your listing images need to do the explaining: what the pages look like, how many are included, how large they print and whether the item is a download. A styled mockup can help, but it should support clear previews of the real files.
Start with the actual printable
Export the same page the buyer receives and use it in the image. Do not recreate a prettier version for the mockup that omits text, changes the layout or shows activities that are not in the download. Crop and scale it only enough to display it legibly. A frame or desk scene is useful when the context matters, but keep the printable recognisable.
For a pack, use a spread of several different pages to show variety. If the product includes 12 bingo cards, show distinct boards plus a calling sheet. If it is a colouring book, show several actual outlines, not only an illustrated cover.

Build a useful image sequence
- Thumbnail: product type, theme and a clear view of the printable.
- Page previews: close views of representative pages at a readable scale.
- What's included: exact page count, formats, sizes and colour options.
- How it works: a simple printed example or preparation steps if relevant.
- Download reminder: clarify that the purchase is digital, without burying the artwork in text.
Not every listing needs five images in exactly this order. The goal is to answer real buyer questions. Make the first image especially clear when viewed as a tiny mobile thumbnail.

Make a mockup that feels truthful
Place a printable on a neutral desk, clipboard or classroom table that fits the use. Keep props subordinate to the product and avoid depicting markers, stickers or frames as included items unless they are. If an activity is meant for children to colour, showing it already fully coloured can confuse the buyer; add a clear uncoloured preview too.
Use lighting and contrast that reveal the page edges. A white worksheet on a white background needs a soft shadow or pale surface to show its shape. Check that text remains readable after exporting the final JPEG or PNG.

What text belongs on images?
Keep text brief and factual: “8 activity pages,” “A4 + US Letter PDFs” or “instant download” when those statements are true. Avoid filling the first photo with search terms, giant sale badges or claims the customer cannot verify. The title and description can carry details that would be too small to read in a thumbnail.
Check the images on a phone
View each Etsy listing image at thumbnail size and on a phone. If the printable disappears into the background, enlarge it or increase the contrast. If a page count or file-size note is unreadable, simplify it. Check that the first image still makes the type of printable obvious without relying on tiny text.

Common mockup mistakes
- ❌ Showing an inaccurate page: replace it with the exact customer PDF preview.
- ❌ Using the same cover on every image: show inner pages and differences between versions.
- ❌ Hiding page count: state it in a clear image and the written listing.
- ❌ Implying physical delivery: make the digital format explicit.
- ❌ Tiny collage pages: use a close-up image so buyers can inspect the content.
How do images affect Etsy search?
Etsy says its search considers the first photo alongside the title, tags, attributes, description and other listing signals. That does not mean adding a keyword as text on a picture guarantees ranking. A clear, accurate first image may make it easier for the right buyer to recognise and click the product.
Example: build images for a five-page activity pack
Start with a simple first image showing three actual pages at a useful scale and the pack name. On image two, show a full-page maze so the buyer can inspect its lines. Image three can show the matching and counting pages side by side. Image four can list “five activity pages, A4 and US Letter PDFs” only if those are the true contents. Image five can show the pack printed on a table, with props clearly presented as styling.
Now compare the image sequence with the final download. If the first image shows a colouring page that was removed from the pack, update it before publishing. If an image lists six pages but the PDF has five, fix the count in both the image and description.
When should you use a lifestyle mockup?
Use one when it helps buyers picture the printable in use: a reward chart on a wall, a bingo game on a party table or an activity pack laid out for a child. Show the actual pages clearly in other images as well. Choose a setting that fits the product, and keep decorative props from obscuring the worksheet or making it look as though physical items are included.
Final review before upload
Check that every image matches the final download, the count and size claims are correct, and any props are not misleading. Then open the listing on a phone. For the broader process, read the Etsy beginner guide and our guide to getting customers.

Frequently asked questions
How many listing images do I need for a kids printable?
Use enough images to show the actual pages, what is included, how a key activity works and the file format. The right number depends on the product; avoid filling slots with near-identical pictures.
Should I show every page in the preview?
Show a useful range of actual pages and the overall contents, especially when pages differ. You can use a small overview for the full pack and separate close-ups so buyers can inspect the details.
Can I photograph a printed copy for a digital download?
Yes, a photo can help show the printable in use. Make it clear that the buyer receives a digital file, and include a readable preview of the actual download so the photo does not imply that printed sheets or props are shipped.
Can I reuse the same mockup layout across listings?
A consistent layout can make your shop recognisable. Replace the sample pages, page count, sizes and text for each product, and check the finished image against that listing’s actual download.
