If you sell kids printables to buyers in different countries, page size is one of the easiest details to overlook. A4 and US Letter are similar, but they are not identical. A design placed close to an edge can clip or scale awkwardly when a buyer prints on the other paper size. Here is how to choose, export and describe the sizes honestly.
A4 vs US Letter at a glance
| Paper | Dimensions | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| A4 | 210 × 297 mm | UK and many other countries |
| US Letter | 8.5 × 11 inches (about 216 × 279 mm) | United States and some other markets |
A4 is narrower and taller; US Letter is wider and shorter. Both are portrait proportions here. “Print at 100%” will preserve the document's intended size but may crop parts if the paper differs. “Fit to page” can scale it, but may make small writing areas even smaller. Neither setting fixes a design that uses the entire edge.

Which size should you sell?
Start with where your customers are and how they will print. If you sell mainly to UK buyers, A4 is a natural base. If you target US Etsy searches, US Letter matters. Offering both can reduce questions, provided you actually prepare and test both. A single file with a title saying “A4 and Letter” is not two sizes unless it contains separately designed or verified versions.
Decide the size before placing margins, grids or cut lines. Bingo cards, crowns and activity placemats can be particularly sensitive: a small reduction in scale changes the size of writing boxes or craft pieces. For multi-page packs, keep all pages consistent within each file.
Leave room for the printer
Most home printers cannot print to the edge of the sheet without a borderless setting. Keep instructions, icons, borders and cut marks comfortably inside the page. The exact safe margin depends on the printer, so a printed test is more reliable than a single universal number. If artwork is meant to bleed to the edge, explain that trimming or borderless printing may be needed.
A reward chart with boxes touching the edges might look fine in a design tool but lose its final column when printed. If the chart is intended for stickers, print it and use an actual sticker or pen to check the spaces remain practical after any scaling.

How to prepare two files
- Make or duplicate a document at the exact target page dimensions.
- Reposition items as needed; do not assume a one-click resize maintains the layout.
- Export a print-ready PDF for each paper size.
- Open each exported PDF and confirm the page dimensions in its properties.
- Print a page on matching paper and check margins, legibility and use of the activity.

Name files so a buyer can choose correctly: for example Garden-Scavenger-Hunt-A4.pdf and Garden-Scavenger-Hunt-US-Letter.pdf. If you supply multiple files on Etsy, check its current digital file limits before uploading.

What to say in the listing
Write “Includes A4 and US Letter PDFs” only if both are present and tested. State portrait or landscape where that changes expectations. For a craft with cut-out pieces, mention any scissors or assembly needed. A preview image can list both paper sizes and show a representative page, but the actual artwork should still be visible.
Do not promise “fits any printer” or “works at any size.” Buyers may print from phones, browsers or PDF readers with different scaling defaults. A short instruction such as “select the PDF matching your paper size and print at actual size; check your printer margins” is more useful.

Common page-size questions
Can I sell only one size?
Yes, if the listing clearly says which size buyers get. Some products are made for a specific paper size. Offering both can be convenient, but an accurately described single-size download is better than an untested second version.
Can I simply change the document dimensions?
That can be the first step, not the final check. Inspect the spacing, text wrapping, borders and shape proportions after the change. Export and print-test the second size as a separate product file.
What about square clipart?
Individual PNG clipart assets are different from a full-page printable PDF. Their pixel dimensions and transparent or white background should be described separately. Do not confuse an image resolution with the dimensions of a printable page.
A practical example: convert a counting worksheet
Imagine a US Letter worksheet with five counting rows and answer boxes along the right. When adapting it to A4, check both vertical and horizontal spacing. The taller A4 sheet may give more space between rows, but its narrower width can push an answer box close to the edge. Move or resize elements thoughtfully, rather than scaling the whole page until the artwork looks small.
Print a sample and have someone complete it. Can they write an answer comfortably? Do the icons still have enough separation to count? These checks matter more than whether the layout looks symmetrical on a monitor.
Quick checklist for sellers
- Document page dimensions match the advertised size.
- All important artwork stays inside printer-friendly margins.
- Text and activity spaces remain usable after export.
- Each PDF is named for the correct paper size.
- The listing images and description state exactly which sizes are supplied.
When a buyer asks for a different size, do not casually say they can print at any scale. Tell them what you tested and, if you decide to create another size, treat it as a separate design and quality check.
Use size as part of product quality
Good sizing reduces buyer frustration and helps a product look professional when it leaves the screen. For a complete listing workflow, see how to sell kids printables on Etsy and use the page-size checklist above for every new pack.
